CBN: BVN registration To Be Extended Till June for Nigerians abroad

Central Bank of Nigeria has extended the Bank Verification Number registration exercise for Nigerians abroad from January 31 to June 30, 2016.

The CBN, in a circular on Thursday, said the extension would allow Nigerian bank customers in the Diaspora to obtain their BVN and link it with their respective bank accounts.

The circular, signed by the Director, Banking and Payments System, CBN, Mr. Dipo Fatokun, stated that the CBN had also increased the number of BVN registration centres overseas to allow more bank customers to register.

The circular read, “The CBN has observed, through a recent survey, the low percentage of registration of Nigerian bank customers in the Diaspora, which may be attributed to lack of accessibility to registration centres and unavailability of registration centres in some cities where Nigerian population is high.

“Consequently, all the Deposit Money Banks are hereby requested to note that the BVN enrolment for Nigerian bank customers in the Diaspora is hereby extended to June 30, 2016. This is to enable such customers to complete the enrolment and link the BVN with their bank accounts.”

The CBN further said plans were on to deploy more BVN registration centres in locations with high Nigerian population.

The central bank had in October last year closed the BVN registration process within the country and directed banks to stop customers without the numbers from carrying out transactions on their accounts.
It said only customers who obtained and registered their BVNs should be granted access to their accounts.

Uwazuruike Accused Of Trying To Plot An Attack Secretly- MASSOB

The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has accused ousted leader, Ralph Uwazuruike, of plotting to attack its secretariat at Okwe, Onuimo council in Imo State, in order to restore himself as the group’s leader.

The group warned Uwazuruike to stem the plan as it will resist such attempts, even as it appealed security agencies to come to its aid.

“Uwazuruike is under pressure because he never fought for the Igbo cause. That is why we are appealing to security agencies to come to our aid as our demonstration for Biafra is peaceful. We will resist Uwazuruike fire-to-fire if security agencies fail to arrest him.

“We will not watch him take over our headquarters. He has mortgaged our future to politicians,” Madu said.

The group reiterated its insistence for the release of the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Biafra Zionist Movement (BZM), Ben Onwuka, and other Biafra activists in detention.

Lassa Tension - Riverse State Declared An Emegency On Lassa Fever.

The government of Rivers State has declared an emergency on Lassa fever. It is tagged ‘Operation kill all Rats’.
Five persons and a medical doctor have died of the virus.

The Ministry of Environment declared the emergency to create awareness on the disease and the need to keep rats off homes and environments.

Commissioner of Health Dr. Theophillus Odagme, who spoke to The Nation yesterday said its sister ministry is undertaking the step to consolidate on the efforts of the Health ministry in the fight against Lassa.

Odagme said the three suspected cases, which were admitted to the Port Johnson Borokri treatment centre, including a nursing mother and her baby (index case), tested negative and have been discharged.
He noted that over 400 persons have been placed under watch following the deaths but none has tested positive, even as he was optimistic that if residents keep to the rules, the state might be cleared next month.

“Last week, three persons were admitted into one of the treatment centres. Two of the patients were referred from private clinics; one is related to a late victim, while the other came from a public hospital.
“Samples were taken for analysis, but the results came out negative. They were stabilised and discharged for proper treatment of their cases.

“As at the last count, 403 persons were being monitored but the first set of 60 placed under watch following the index case, have been discharged after completing the 21 days virus incubation period without manifesting any symptom.

“The contact tracing teams (13 teams) are still on, meeting and monitoring them every day. There is a massive sensitisation going on in markets, churches and mosques to educate residents on the need to improve their personal hygiene and clean their surroundings as preventive measures.
One person has died of the disease in Ebonyi State. Governor Dave Umahi confirmed the death yesterday in Abakaliki at a town hall meeting.

He said the deceased, a student, whose identity could not be ascertained, died on Monday.
The governor directed that residents close to the vicinity of the deceased should be monitored and urged the people to seek proper medical attention should they suspect anything.

“It may be Lassa fever and if it is detected early, it can be treated than when it reaches an advanced stage when it may be difficult to save the victim.”

Umahi thanked the Federal Government for donating virology equipment to fight the disease, which he said were being installed and will be put to use soon.

1.7 million people in Ekiti State practice open defecation, the European Union (EU) Senior Expert on Sanitation, Tope Babalobi, has said. He spoke yesterday during a breakfast programme on the Ekiti Television (EKTV), Daybreak Nigeria.

Babalobi, who is also the National Chairman of Water and Sanitation Network, urged the people to maintain a clean environment to avoid falling victim of Lassa fever.
He noted that proper sanitation and good hygienic practices would keep rats and rodents, believed to be vectors of Lassa fever, at bay.

“Rodents and rats have no business coming to your house if it is clean. Eateries, restaurants, schools, shops, markets must prioritise sanitation.

“If you manage your waste very well, these diseases will be far. This is a challenge to us as individuals in our homes and business premises,” Babalobi said.

Buhari Can Not Fix Collapsing Economy Overnight - says Oyegun

All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman Chief John Odigie-Oyegun said yesterday that the suffering by Nigerians as a result of the economic hardship in the country is not the making of the party.

Addressing a news conference at the party secretariat in Abuja, he said the Buhari government inherited a collapsed economy, stressing that the corruption investigation is affecting members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) more because they stayed longer in government and mismanaged the economy for 16 years.

Oyegun said it is not possible to rebuild a collapsed structure overnight without first clearing the debris.
He noted that while the Buhari administration could feel the hardship Nigerians were passing through, there is not going to be a quick fix for the economy.

He said: “Our party, the APC, is aware of the hardship that the misgovernment of the last 16 years plunged this country. We are aware of the hard times, the tough times that Nigerians at the margin are going through. Apart from the party, I must also say that it is one of the main concerns of Mr. President.
“He is fully conscious and aware of the tough times that people are going through. I want to assure the people through you that everything is being done to stabilise the economy and to ameliorate the deprivation that the people are going through.

“The Buhari administration inherited a prostrate economy. Not just that, nobody envisaged that there will be a near total collapse of the price of crude and when you juxtapose that with our consumption habit – when we tend to import virtually everything from toothpick to choice champagne, which puts pressure on the foreign exchange stock of the nation and as a result, put up a lot of issues that are being dealt with today by the President’s team.

He said the citizens consumed heavily in the past because oil was sold at over $100 a barrel, stressing that situation had changed.
Oyegun urged Nigerians to adjust to the new reality.

I am an armed robber. We are three in number and we used to do stop and search operation and the total money I have made in armed robbery is N500,000. I started robbing in 2014 when I came out from prison in 2013; I went to Ikoyi prison for some months after being arrested for robbing a whiteman of his phone in Ikoyi Club. In prison, some inmates are bad and some are good. The bad ones learn bad things.
I joined Eiye Cult in prison, they beat me and gave me water mixed with pepper. They later gave me orientation. When I was leaving prison, they gave me the name of an arms dealer who will give me gun. His name is Segun. You can see the Eiye mark on my body. I used to buy one bullet for N1,000.

We used to buy like 15 to 20 bullets. If my bullet finishes, I call Segun who is based in Cotonou. When I collect gun from Segun in Cotonou, I enter motor that does not carry load. They don’t search motor that does not carry load. I have not married but I have a wife, she loves me. If I go to prison she will still wait for me because she waited for me the first time I went to prison.”he said

Fed Govt urges court to Reject Kanu's bail

The Federal Government yesterday urged a Federal High  Court in Abuja to decline the bail application by pro-Biafra agitator, Nnamdi Kanu and his associates, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi.

The trio were arraigned on January 20 on a six-count of treasonable felony; running an unlawful organisation, plotting to levy war on the country, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition and unlawful importation of a transmitter, with which they ran the illegal Radio Biafra.

Yesterday, the Director of Public Prosecution, Mohammad Diri, moved the counter-affidavit on their bail application, urging the court to decline the request.
Diri said Kanu admitted he was a British citizen who sneaked into the country.
He added that he could sneak out of the country, if admitted to bail.

Earlier, while arguing the bail application, defence lawyer M. U. Udechukwu told the court that their offences were bailable and urged the court to grant them bail.

Udechukwu relied on sections 158 and 162 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015.
He argued that the prosecution’s claims were not sufficient to deny the defendants bail.
Justice James Tsoho adjourned ruling till Friday.
