Britain To Adopt Military Personnel To Nigeria

Britain To Adopt Military Personnel To Nigeria

The British Secretary of State for Defence, Michael Fallon, has said his country will deploy additional military advisers and trainers to Nigeria to help in the fight against Boko Haram insurgency.
Fallon stated this while fielding question from State House correspondents after a closed door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Monday.
According to him, the military personnel, who will be in Nigeria next year, will be offering training to improve the Nigerian Army’s resilience to Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) left behind by Boko Haram.

“These terrorists – ISIS, Boko Haram – they are opposed to us, our ways of life and they need to be defeated.
“So, we have been discussing today what more Britain can do; can we step up our military effort with more training, more help in dealing with Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and with dealing with medical evacuation and airfield defence.
“And what more can be done to improve the intelligence Nigeria needs to deal with terrorism.
“Well, this year, for example, we have had some 130 military personnel here helping to train the Nigerian Army.
“Next year, I want to more than double that to more than 300 personnel are coming to offer training and particularly to improve the Army’s resilience to IEDs, which obviously have been left behind by Boko Haram when they were being moved out of the villages they captured.”

Five Killed, Many Injured As JTF Clash With Pro-Biafra Groups

five people were shot dead on Thursday, December 17, following a clash between the Indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB), Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), and the Joint Task Force (JTF).

Vanguard reports that the clash ensued, after soldiers opened fire on a jubilant crowd of pro-Biafra agitators.
All the markets around the Niger Bridge Head, including the bridge head market, Onitsha patent and propitiatory medicine dealers market (Ogbo Ogwu market) and other markets located around the bridge, including Abada market were quickly shut down, following sporadic shooting by the military to scare the jubilant crowd away.

According to an eye-witness at the Onitsha head bridge, the Biafra agitators were said to be marching on the road near the River Niger Bridge, chanting solidarity songs in jubilation for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, and were accosted by the soldiers, who ordered them to go back.

It was when the pro-Biafra groups refused to go back, that the soldiers allegedly opened fire on them.
Some other sources have it that, the pro-Biafra agitators and those sympathetic to their cause, were jubilating, singing and dancing near the bridge and in annoyance, the soldiers, who had been guiding the bridge opened fire on them, gunning down four.

Police spokesman, Ali Okechukwu confirmed the clash and accused the pro-Biafra agitators of mobilizing over I00 of their members to launch attack on the soldiers at the Niger Bridge Head.
He said the Zionist also tried to dispossess the security operatives of their guns.

Okechukwu who was silent on the number of people killed,  said: “I learnt that there was a disagreement between the Army, IPOB and MASSOB members, who mobilized over I00 of their members to attack soldiers at the Niger bridge head.”

He said that he was trying to get the army authorities to ascertain the true position of the incident, but unfortunately they were not picking their calls.

The police image maker was not forth-coming on the number of casualties, he requested to be given enough time to make calls to ascertain the true position of things.

Speaking on the incident, leader of MASSOB, Uchenna Madu, said the news of the release of Kanu elicited singing, dancing and jubilation in Onitsha and other ‘Biafran’ lands.

He informed that those Biafrans in Onitsha took their dance to Chukwemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu plaque at the Niger bridge head and out of envy, the soldiers, who mounted a road-block there, opened fire on the dancing protesters and killed four.

According to him, no amount of intimidation, harassment and killing of their members will make them resort to violence.
He stressed that adding “the military is doing all sorts of things to push us into violence, but we will never do that because that is what has been setting us free in all the harassment and intimidation we have been going through.”

Sources say that immediately the four people were killed, the police, army, navy and civil defence, that had been harassing and intimidating the residents and subjecting them to all sorts of dehumanizing treatments at their check-points, abandoned the roads.

The seven people who sustained bullet wounds, were transferred to Multi Care Hospital, Onitsha and the bodies of the dead were reportedly taken to a yet to be identified hospital in Onitsha.

It will be recalled that a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, yesterday, ordered the Department of State Services (DSS), to immediately release  the detained  leader of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu.
The court directed that Kanu, who had been in detention since October 17,  should be released “unconditionally.”

Ruling on the fundamental rights suit by Kanu, the trial judge, Justice Ademola Adeniyi, said there was no basis for the applicant to remain in custody since there was currently no charge pending against him.

IPOB Dragged Federal Government To Court Over Allegations Judicial Killing

IPOB Dragged  Federal Government To Court Over Allegations Judicial Killing

Seven others were also charged alongside the federal government, with the IPOB seeking compensation for members who were either killed or injured by security operatives during the pro- Biafra protests in some cities in the southeast.

In the suit marked as; FHC/ ABJ/1S/1035/2015, filed by; Okere Kingdom Nnamdi and Co, the Trustees of Kingdom Human Rights Foundation International also urged the court for an order “granting the unconditional and immediate release of members of IPOB who are in detention in prisons, police and Army custody and further restrain respondents from further harassment of the applicants who are peacefully and non-violently exercising their rights to self-determination, freedom of association and expression.”

According to IPOB, the action of the security agencies ran contrary to the provisions of sections 39 and 40 of the 1999 Constitution and Articles 1, IV, XIX and XX of the African Charter on Human Peoples Rights (Ratification and Enforcement) Act.

The group also sought the order of the court to declare the onslaught against IPOB members by security agencies as a crime against humanity, unlawful, cruel, inhuman and a violation of their rights to peaceful assembly, freedom of association and right to self determination.
According to Breaking Times, the group is demanding N100 million for families of each of the nine IPOB members who were killed and N50 million for each of the 18 injured during protests which took place on October 20 and December 2, in Anambra, Imo, Ebonyi, Bayelsa, Rivers and Delta states respectively.

Joined in the suit are the President; Attorney-General of the federation; the National Assembly; Chief of Army Staff; Inspector General of Police, Commissioners of Police in Imo, Anambra, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers states; Commandant-General, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and Director-General, State Security Service.
Meanwhile, the IPOB has been warned by the Lagos state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The warning comes on the heels of hints that the pro-Biafra group is plotting to stage a mass demonstration in Lagos.
In a statement made by Joe Igbokwe the APC spokesman, the party warned that it will not allow politically sponsored hoodlums masquerading as pro-Biafran protesters or any other group to plunge Lagos into crisis.

APC Warns Pro-Biafra Activists About Lagos Rally

PM News reports that the warning was contained in a statement made by Joe Igbokwe, the Lagos state publicity secretary of the APC.

Igbokwe stressed that the state would not allow politically sponsored hoodlums masquerading as pro-Biafran protesters or any other group to plunge Lagos into crisis.

Appealing to those behind the plot, Igbokwe noted that the security agencies led by the Lagos state commissioner of police, Fatai Owoseni, vowed to deal ruthlessly with anybody found to be involved in such protests.

“As a party that governs Lagos, it will be derelict of us to watch a group of politically-sponsored hoodlums tamper with the tight security system that has been effortlessly put in place by the state government to combat increasing crime rates in the state. We cannot allow these hoodlums, sponsored by politicians that failed woefully in the last general elections, to unleash mayhem on peace loving Lagosians so as to achieve dark political aims that run parallel to the interests of Lagosians.

“It is obvious that the sponsors of the planned protest want to throw the state into needless mayhem by their act but the state will be ready to mete out to them the appropriate antidotes for such folly. Knowing full well that whatever they purport to represent is alien to Lagos and Lagosians, we wonder what the evil masterminds of these purported protests want to achieve in Lagos if not to plunge the state into unmitigated disruption and crisis and we state that Lagos will not allow such plans.

“Knowing full well that hoodlums are meant to capitalize on any so-called protests to unleash mayhem on Lagosians and compromise its tight security, we have no doubt that the brains behind the protest have very sinister intents the state will not allow,” the APC said.

The party urged market leaders to desist from any plot and not allow their markets to be used for such dangerous activities; otherwise, the state would not hesitate to show such market leaders the exit.
The APC also called on Lagosians to be law abiding and inform security agencies about the masterminds of such evil plots that endanger the security of lives and properties in Lagos.

Read An Open Letter From Biafra Youths To Arewa

Editors note: The Youths of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have written an open letter to the Arewa Youths, recalling all the hardships their people have experienced during the Nigerian Civil War and after it. Emphasizing that they have more in common than both sides think, the Youths of IPOB once again asked for comprehensing and accepting them as a separate state.

source link

We read your hate letters
We the Youths of the Indigenous People of Biafra are bringing to your notice that we read your warning and hate letter, giving Biafrans living in the North a “two weeks ultimatum to exit Arewa land”. The warning letter you wrote was signed by Aliyu Usman of the Arewa Youth Development Forum Foundation (AYDF), Aminu Adams of the Arewa Citizens Action For Change (ACAC), Bridget Cantiop Yahya of the Northern Emancipation Network(NEN), Comrade Yusuf Muhammed of Arewa Students Forum (ASF) and Terkular J. Bishama of Arewa Youths Vanguard (AYV). We also read the pretentious and hypocritical statement at a Press Conference by National President of Arewa Triumphant Youth Foundation (ATYF), asking Biafrans to stop agitating for Biafra, a letter he never sent to Boko Haram members and a press release never conducted against Boko Haram insurgency.

We have more in common than you think

The Youths of the Indigenous People Of Biafra are also aware of Arewa Youths who protested in the month of July 2014 in Kano state (Arewa Land), calling for the Division and Dissolution of Nigeria as a Political entity. Just as you are Arewa Youths and you know that through documented history and your Fathers that your original name is Arewa, so did we get to know that we are The Indigenous People Of Biafra.

It was you who decided to bring war to our houses

You all know that Nigeria is a forced marriage and a contraption concocted by Frederick Lugard a British man; if not there will be no Amalgamation. In Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s word, “Nigeria is an artificial contraption and zoo, concocted by the British to their own amazement.” You know we are not one and that you have always tagged us to be “nyamiri and  harune (infidels)”, how can one you call infidel be in the same Country with you? NO WAY. When your Fathers were still under the emblem of Arewa Youths, they were the first to call for division. They chanted “araba, araba” meaning “let’s divide, let’s divide”. They did not just chant “araba”, they moved on killing Biafrans and Biafrans were forced to come back home, empty handed.
Not minding the Money Biafrans had in Arewa Land, How much Wealth, How many Building or Structures they had, your Fathers killed those that stayed and slaughtered them like Rams. Your Brother Gowon and other Arewa Elders decided to bring War to our Homes and tagged us Cowards, rather than allowing our Fathers to go home and amend their broken faces, which brought about the declaration of Biafra Independence and the Civil War. Upon till today, your Fathers and you the Arewa Youths have never seized to slaughter the Indigenous People Of Biafra, same way you slaughter your Rams for Sallah. It is very obvious that you respect the Life’s of your Rams, more than that of Biafrans, as you slaughter your Rams occasionally, but slaughter Biafrans frequently.

We swept the past under the carpet but you kept slaughtering us

Been the Peaceful loving Biafrans we are, we swept the past under the carpet, came back to Arewa Land bought Land from you and built on it, in other to improve the economical growth of Arewa Land. But the millions of the Arewa people in Biafra Land barely build and prefer sleeping outside our Shops and Roadsides, because of the hatred and grudges you have against the Indigenous People Of Biafra, hence you are avoiding to add an inch to the development and improvement of the economy and growth of BiafraLand but you prefer stealing our natural resources.
Arewa have taken over Onitsha, Okigwe, Aba, Owerri, PortHarcourt, Orlu, Uyo, Asaba, Calabar, Enugu and other regions in Biafra Land. There is no State that is devoid of an erupted Central Mosque and other Smaller Mosque in Biafra Land. We don’t touch your Imams, Worshippers and Mosque, but you Arewa Youths burn down our Churches, Kill our Pastors, Slaughter our Fathers, Open up our Mothers and kill the unborn foetus, but you have never been queried or cautioned by Arewa Politicians and Elders. You Arewa Youths have been slaughtering and setting ablaze the Youths of The Indigenous People Of Biafra who are serving Nigeria as Youth Corpers, if not for the intervention and cries of Biafran Youths, the Law stopping Nigeria Government from extending Biafran Youth Corpers service to Arewa Land, wouldn’t have been sanctioned.
Arewa well armed Youths in form of herdsmen, have invaded and are destroying our Farmlands, Raping female Biafran Youths and our Mothers, Killing our Fathers and Traditional Rulers, the leaders of Arewa Youth have never written to your Brothers and Political godfathers to sanction a law that will refrain your fellow Arewa Youths from practicing such barbaric and evil act against the Indigenous people of Biafra. Your political godfather and brother Mohammad Buhari and your Brother Lawal Musa Daura, have been unlawfully detaining the Leader of the Indigenous People Of Biafra Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, but you haven’t written any letter against this act or give an ultimatum for his release, that exposes your hypocritical nature. This proves Mazi Nnamdi Kanu right, when he said: “Arewas are hypocrites and Nigeria is a zoo, littered with Black men whose hypocritical heart is engulfed with wickedness and evil”.

Amid provocations, arrests, tear gassing and killings we are still peaceful

Ever since the detention of our Leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, all we have been doing is protesting peacefully, amid provocation, arrest, tear gassing and killing of IPOB Youths, at the command of Mohammadu Buhari, which the World knows you can’t take, if Mohammadu Buhari was in Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s situation. If you could kill us when your political god Mohammadu Buhari lost an election, what will be your reaction if he is unlawfully detained, same way our Leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is being unlawfully detained?
source link

As the Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra Mazi Nnamdi Kanu will always say, “It is Biafra or we all die getting Biafra” IPOB Youths are following protocol/directives from IPOB leaders. Being peaceful does not mean we are coward, we are watching and documenting everything and in due time we shall present our case with facts and figures. Writing to those who claim to be our Political Leaders and Traditional Rulers, won’t stop this peaceful demonstration and agitation for Biafra, as all WE WANT IS THE RELEASE OF THE LEADER OF THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE OF BIAFRA MAZI NNAMDI KANU AND THE RESTORATION OF BIAFRA.

Police Arrest Three Armed Robbers In Ogun State

DSP Muyiwa Adejobi, the state command spokesman who made this known to Punch Metro said the armed robbers who are three in number have been terrorising communities in the Agbado area of the state.

The force mouthpiece who gave the names of the suspects as Yusuf Olohuntoba, aka Ete; Abiola Yekini and Tope Oyeleye, aka Elede confirmed that they were arrested on Monday, November 30. He said other members of the gang identified as Sule; J.J, Absorber and Ramoni are still on the run.
It was gathered that the gang which is allegedly led by Elede and Ramoni, had operated in some houses around Owonikoko and Ayinla areas at about 2.am on the aforementioned day. It was further gathered that they stole phones and other household items including cash. Luck, however, ran out on them as they stopped on Ayinla street to share their loot, but a controversy ensued among them in the process of sharing.

A source disclosed that a resident who saw them sharing their loot put a distress call to the police, who quickly swung into action and mobilised to the area and arrested three of the gang members.
The command spokesman listed the items recovered from the bandits to include; two cut-to-size guns with a live cartridge, two spanners, a burglar proof cutter, one DVD player and 16 mobile phones.
In his confessional statement, 21-year-old Elede, who hails from Ekiti state, said he had been robbing for three years now, adding that he joined the gang after he lost six members of his former seven-man gang in police shootout. He said the police tracked them down after they had killed a banker whom they collected the sum of N7 million from early this year.

Biafras Worries Report On BBC

The last few weeks have seen thousands of young people trooping to the streets of southern Nigeria to protest about the continued detention of a leading Biafra activist, Nnamdi Kanu.

Both new and old media are full of views and reports on the renewed agitation for the short-lived Biafran republic.
If it is not the report of the latest city to host the noisy protest by the mainly ethnic Igbo young men under the banner of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), it may be some hot exchanges on social media about the different interpretation of the event.
The Nigerian military's warning of dire consequences for anyone who tries to carry out what they refer to as treasonable acts, has also been getting attention.
Many Nigerians, with the deadly Boko Haram insurgency in their minds, are trying to understand what is going on, asking why now and what does it all mean?
The latest protests were triggered by the detention of Mr Kanu, the UK-based leader of the IPOB.
He came to Nigeria last month and was arrested by the authorities, accused of treason

ecurity sources say he was arrested for broadcasting hate speech both on the internet and through a banned London-based radio station called Radio Biafra, which he has been using to promote his call for the creation of a Biafran nation. He has already appeared in court but is still under detention as his trial is yet to get off the ground

British Government Declines Namdi Kanu's Request - See Photo

The government of the United Kingdom has reacted to the detention of Director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, a letter published online by Radio Biafra claims.
According to the letter purportedly signed by James Duddridge, who is the UK’s Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the detained Kanu, who also holds a British citizenship, rejected any assistance from the British government concerning his incarceration.
In the letter dated November 19, 2015, Duddridge, who is the Minister for Africa in the Commonwealth, was reacting to a request for information from Rt Hon Harriet Harman, a fellow member of parliament representing the constituency where Kanu resides in England. According to the letter, Kanu was charged with illegally entering Nigeria, conspiracy to incite violence and being the leader of an illegal organization. Recall that the Department of State Security, had on Monday, November 23, requested that the Abuja Magistrate Court where Kanu is being tried, discontinued his trial because it lacked jurisdiction to try a new charge of terrorism that it (DSS) planned to add to the charges against Kanu.

US Journalist Sentence To Prison By Iran Government

Iran has sentenced detained Washington Post journalist Jason Rezaian to an unspecified prison term following his conviction last month on charges that include espionage, Iranian state TV reported Sunday.
Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejehi, the spokesman for Iran's judiciary, announced the punishment in a statement on the TV station's website.

"In brief, it is a prison sentence," he said. The verdict is "not finalized," he added, referring to an expected appeal.
Rezaian's lawyer, Leila Ahsan, told The Associated Press she had not been informed of the verdict — let alone details of the sentence.
"I have no information about details of the verdict," she said. "We were expecting the verdict some three months ago."
Rezaian was detained with his wife, Yeganeh Salehi, and two photojournalists on July 22, 2014. All were later released except Rezaian, a dual U.S.-Iranian citizen.

Rezaian went on trial in four closed-door court hearings at Tehran's Revolutionary Court over the past months. Last month, he was convicted of spying and other charges.

The Post has vigorously denied the accusations against its correspondent.
Rezaian, who has covered Iran for the Post since 2012, grew up in Marin County, California and spent most of his life in the United States. The Post, U.S. officials and Rezaian's family have all called for his release. Iran does not recognize dual-nationality.

Iran's state media, citing the indictment, have said Rezaian collected information on Iranian and foreign individuals and companies circumventing sanctions and passed them on to the U.S. government. Iranian state TV has repeatedly called Rezaian an "American spy."

Earlier this month, the intelligence department of the powerful elite Revolutionary Guard claimed in a report to parliament that Rezaian is an agent seeking to "overthrow" Iran's Islamic ruling system.

His incarceration and trial played out as Iran and five world powers, including the U.S., negotiated a landmark agreement in which the Islamic Republic agreed to curb its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief.

Meet The Most Powerful Black Man in Britain - ken olisa

He's the Queen’s escort in London who locked horns with John Bercow and has a library named after him at Cambridge - not bad for a boy who grew up without a loo in Nottingham

Today Ken Olisa is officially named as the most powerful black person in Britain, not that any of the commuters on the 8.10am from Hampton Wick would know it.

Unassuming and usually dressed in the commuter’s favoured uniform of suit and raincoat, the only thing that hints at his influence is his trademark bow tie – he owns more than 100.

Otherwise, there is little to suggest that Mr Olisa is, according to the annual Powerlist – which names the most influential black people in Britain, more important than Sir Lenny Henry or Mo Farah or the Oscar-winning film director Steve McQueen. How could anyone know that this quiet man from Nottingham wields more power than Lewis Hamilton or Baroness Lawrence?

But wield power Ken Olisa does. The 63-year old was the first British born black man to serve on the board of a public company (Reuters), has his own merchant bank (Restoration Partners), and a library named after him at his Cambridge alma mater (Fitzwilliam).

He is a keen philanthropist (the library came after a £2 million donation), a former governor of the Peabody Trust, a chair of not one but two charities (Thames Reach, which deals with the homeless, and Shaw Trust, which helps the disabled), and is on the board of the Institute of Directors.

And as if all of that weren’t enough, in April, he was made Lord Lieutenant of London, appointed by the Queen on the advice of the Prime Minister. The title gives him an office in Whitehall, a staff of 90, and puts him in charge of all visits made by the royal family within the city – with him even standing in for them on occasion.

So he escorted the Queen to the Home Office last week, and had the miserable task of accompanying the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to the Spectre premiere last month, along with Prince Harry. The next morning he was up early to spend yet more time with the Duchess – this time, on a charity visit to Islington Town Hall.

“I do a lot of calming down in the moments before their arrival,” he explains. “People tend to get very wound up and stressed.” Not so Olisa, who is as cool as the proverbial cucumber, even when wearing the heavy military-style uniform of the Lord Lieutenant.

MASSOB Threatens To Move Ngainst Ohanaeze Ndigbo

The Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra has threatened to move against leaders of the Igbo socio-cultural organisation, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo if they fail to guide their utterances over the Biafra agitation.
In a press statement on Sunday in Awka, Anambra State, by MASSOB’s national director of information, Uchenna Madu, the secessionist group described Ohanaeze’s utterances against the Biafra agitation as selfish and irresponsible.

The Ohanaeze chairman in Anambra State, Dr Chris Eluemunoh, had on Friday described the agitation for Biafra by some Igbo youths as a “madness,” saying that “Biafra died in 1970” when the Nigerian civil war ended.

But MASSOB, in the statement, said the Ohanaeze’s comment was vexatious and would be marched with desired punishment should it continue.
The statement read, “The widely acceptance and consciousness of Biafra can never be thwarted or dislocated by disgruntled Igbo.

“The Anambra State chairman of Ohanaeze Ndigbo statement against Biafra is selfish and irresponsible. He’s an Igbo saboteur who always would sell his family because of money.
“How can a self-acclaimed Igbo leader openly and shamefully disown and condemn Biafra, the living symbol of Igbo survival?”

It added that “MASSOB still believes that Ohanaeze Ndigbo cannot disown Biafra because the national leadership is still silent on this issue, but if finally it does, the Igbo nation will also disown and expel them from Igbo land.

“MASSOB warns Igbo to stop making open derogatory statements against Biafra or we shall banish them from Igbo land.
